Beyond Lawmaking: The 6 Key Duties of a State House of Assembly Member Explained

Many Nigerians know State House of Assembly members primarily as lawmakers, but their responsibilities go beyond sitting in the chamber to make laws. As members of the legislative arm of state government, they also play important roles in representation, oversight and constituency advocacy.

Here are six key duties of a State House of Assembly member:

  1. Lawmaking

Their primary duty is to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state. They may introduce, debate and amend legislation within the constitutional powers of the House. They also participate in reviewing and passing the state’s annual budget.

  1. Representation

A House member serves as the link between their constituency and the state government. They are expected to present the needs, concerns and interests of their constituents before the government.

  1. Oversight Function

The Assembly exercises oversight over the Executive arm of government. Members scrutinise government activities, spending and policy implementation and may conduct investigations where necessary.

  1. Confirmation of Appointments

The State House of Assembly participates in the confirmation of certain appointments where the Constitution or relevant laws require legislative approval.

  1. Impeachment Powers

The House has constitutional powers to initiate proceedings for the removal of a governor or deputy governor on grounds of gross misconduct, following the procedure prescribed by the Constitution.

  1. Constituency Development

Members can advocate for development projects and bring the needs of their constituencies to the attention of the state government, including concerns relating to roads, schools, healthcare and other public infrastructure.

In Essence

A State House of Assembly member is not only a lawmaker, but also a representative, watchdog and advocate for the people of their constituency.
