
A great son of Umuele Umuaka, Prof. Chidi Oguamanam has been appointed to serve on the UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST).
Prof. Oguamanam, who is based in Canada is a Full Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa, where he is also a Research Chair in Bio-Innovation, Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Global Knowledge Governance.
His appointment to the UNESCO commission is for a four-year term, from 2026 to 2029 and recognises his expertise and contributions at the intersection of law, science, technology and ethics.
The UNESCO commission brings together experts from around the world to examine major ethical questions arising from scientific and technological advancement, including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, climate change, quantum computing and emerging technologies.
The appointment places Prof. Oguamanam among international experts contributing to discussions that can influence global approaches to the responsible development and use of science and technology.
