Details have emerged on the incident that forced suspension of the Umuaka Peoples Cup 2026 final between Obeakpu FC and Amiyi FC.
The match stood at 1:0 in favour of Obeakpu before a controversial equaliser by Amiyi brought it to an abrupt end as a major officiating controversy sparked protests across the stadium.
According to reports from the pitch, the referee blew his whistle while Amiyi FC floated the ball into the box through a corner kick. This caused Obeakpu FC players to stop defending, believing play had been halted. The ball then went into the net of Obeakpu unchallenged and the referee surprisenly awarded goal and that immediately triggered outrage as many questioned how a goal could stand after play had effectively been stopped.
A controversial corner kick had earlier been given against Obeakpu for goalkeeper’s delay and both incidents occurred within a tense three-minute period towards the end of the match, adding to the confusion and intensity on the pitch.
The combined effect of these decisions led to heated arguments and loud protests from fans, ultimately forcing officials to suspend the game.
The matter is now expected to be reviewed by the Akah Ebeiri Sports Council, who will determine the final outcome and next steps.
Despite an otherwise well-organised tournament, this incident has raised serious concerns about errors in decisive moments.
Umuaka News24 calls for a fair, transparent review while urging supporters to remain calm as authorities work toward a resolution.
More updates will follow.
