As the Umuaka Peoples Assembly WhatsApp group engages in vibrant discussions about past great leaders, the Akah Vanguard Association stands out as a shining example of youth-driven progress in Umuaka’s history. Founded in November 28, 1988, by four friends: Austin Agbahiwe, Guinness Ohazuruike, Onyeka [D.O] Nnadozie, and Okey Onyenanu, who later invited Vice Onyemepu, Emma Onyemepu, Dennis Durugbor, Livy Duru, Eddy Obi, Emeka Nwokedi, Fidex Nwaozuzu, Hycinth Eze, and others, then young undergraduates, the association’s impactful work in the early 1990s, particularly under the leadership of Dr. Austin Agbahiwe from 1993 through 2011 continues to inspire. He took over from their hard working first Chancellor, Sir Engr Vice Onyemepu. This article revisits Akah Vanguard’s contributions and calls on today’s youths to carry forward its legacy.
*The Rise of Akah Vanguard*
Established in 1988, the Akah Vanguard Association brought together Umuaka’s graduate and undergraduate students to drive community development. By 1993, under the dynamic leadership of Dr Austin Agbahiwe and with the guidance of its grand patron, Chief Bernard Anyanwu (Omereoha N’Isuland) and patrons, the association had become a catalyst for change, addressing critical socio-political and economic issues through innovative initiatives.
*Transformative Contributions*
■ Empowered a reasonable number of Akah youths through contributions to their education.
■ Held seminars, workshops, symposia, workshops, lectures etc which provoked thoughts and consciousness of Akah to local, national and international issues.
■ Pubished for years a series of Akah Vanguard Digest magazines for information dissemination and point of reference.
■ As a strong pressure group, influenced government in providing some infrastructural support for our communities which bettered the life of our people;
■ Used our positions to help some of our young graduates to secure employment opportunities in companies, banks, organisations, ministries, etc
■ Aroused the consciousness of all our people on the need to think of what to do for our communities during our life time.
While striving to achieve all these goals and visions, they held meetings nationally and internationally [April 2, 2008 at Dallas, Texas USA, and August 30, 2010 at London, United Kingdom in collaboration with Umuaka Welfare Dev Assoc (UWDA)].
In absolute terms, Akah Vanguard, led by Dr. Agbahiwe, achieved milestones that left a lasting impact on Umuaka:
1. *Merit Awards for Community Champions*
In a landmark event, over thirty years ago, on December 29, 1993, Akah Vanguard honored some Umuaka sons and daughters for their outstanding contributions to community development. These merit awards, organized with the support of the association’s patrons, celebrated selfless leadership and inspired others to serve. The ceremony was a powerful moment of unity and pride for Akalites.
2. *University Scholarship Awards*
Committed to education as a pillar of progress, Akah Vanguard provided scholarships to deserving students, enabling them to pursue higher education. These awards empowered young Akalites, many of whom became leaders in their fields, strengthening Umuaka’s future.
3. *Seminars and Symposia on Key Issues*
The association organized seminars and symposia that tackled contemporary polito-socio challenges, from governance to cultural preservation. These events sparked dialogue, raised awareness, and encouraged community engagement, positioning Akah Vanguard as a thought leader in Umuaka.
*Voices from 1994: Reflections from Members*
To capture the essence of Akah Vanguard’s work under Dr. Agbahiwe, I spoke with former members who were undergraduates or fresh graduates in 1993:
🎤*Mr.Onyeka [D.O] Nnadozie Former (1992-1994)*: “Working with Dr. Agbahiwe was inspiring. His vision for Umuaka drove us to organize the 1993 merit awards. It showed me that young people can achieve great things with passion and teamwork.”
🎤*Dennis Durugbor Member (1991-1993)*: “The scholarships and seminars opened doors for us. Dr. Agbahiwe’s leadership taught us that you don’t need wealth or power to make a difference—just commitment.”
These reflections highlight how Dr. Agbahiwe’s leadership galvanized young Akalites to contribute meaningfully to their community.
