The Obeakpu Progressive Union in South Africa has begun drilling a solar-powered borehole for the Obeakpu community in Umuaka, under the leadership of Tochukwu Thomas, popularly known as Highest Pope who is its chairman and Desmond Chukwuebuka Amaechi (Ebukadinaeze) as its Secretary-General.

Speaking to Umuaka News24 on behalf of the organisation, Public Relations Officer Mr. Chukwudubem Amaechi explained that the project was originally scheduled to start a year ago when funds were available. However, insecurity and extended consultations with community leaders stalled the process. He expressed the union’s delight that the project is now progressing rapidly.

Mr. Amaechi also acknowledged the immense sacrifices and commitment shown by the union’s executives in making the project a reality. He emphasized that although many families now have private boreholes, the community still urgently needs a solar-powered borehole that runs 24 hours without interruption due to the unstable electricity supply.

“The target of this project is the poorest of the poor,” Amaechi stated. “It is not for those who can already afford boreholes in their homes.”

Earlier today, Mr. Rome Ohanekwu visited the project site, donated drinks to the workers and commended the Obeakpu Progressive Union in South Africa for remembering their roots. He further encouraged other groups to follow their example.
