Tragedy struck yesterday evening when a young son of Umuaka from Obinnwane community was shot dead by armed robbers along the Isu axis.

According to eyewitnesses, he was taking a friend to Ekwe in Isu local government on a motorcycle when he met a roadblock set up by criminals. The robbers had just snatched a motorcycle from the rider ahead of him. Realising the danger, he attempted to turn back, but the criminals opened fire instantly, killing him on the spot and taking his bike.

Earlier that evening, he had played as the goalkeeper in a football match at Obinwanne .

His grieving mother and family have been informed, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary pending investigations and burial arrangements.

We had also received a viral voice note from a man claiming to be from the same Umuduru Ekwe where this incident happened, alleging that he was kidnapped on Ubaha Orodo road in Mbaitolu local government and using the incident to warn people to avoid Umuaka Road to Owerri.

This voice note appears to be leveraging the accusations earlier made by Okwuruora against Umuaka community to spread fear and misinformation.

Since Okwuruora’s statement, many weddings and marriage plans in Umuaka involving in-laws from outside have been cancelled. People invited to funerals and other events in Umuaka have told hosts they will not attend, and local businesses have been badly affected. Despite this, Okwuruora has refused to retract his generalisations, merely saying he does not know the exact location he was taken to or the boundaries of Umuaka.

Crime has no fixed address — just yesterday, an Umuaka son was murdered in the person’s own village of Umuduru Ekwe the same way our Umuaka son was murdered in Okwuluora’s Enugu last year and we never warned people to stop going to Enugu. In the same pattern, We will not call for people to avoid Ekwe Road because of this tragedy.

Criminals move, and insecurity is affecting the entire Igboland.

We urge everyone to desist from labelling one community as a dangerous zone, as such statements hurt innocent residents and businesses. Support the bereaved family and report any useful information to the police or Umuaka community leaders.
