Afor Umuaka Market: Setting the Record Straight. -By Eddy Ahumaraeze
Fearless and truthful Elder from Amiyị.
As the discourse surrounding the Afor Umuaka market continues, I feel compelled to provide clarity on the matter, based on my findings. For the purpose of clarity, let me refresh your minds on the agreement under which the Afor Umuaka market shops were built.
The market shops were constructed with the understanding that existing shop owners, including individuals and communities, would pay N250,000.00 to get back their shops. The Afor Umuaka market building committee adhered to this obligation, with one notable exception – the Amiyi-Akah community, which refused to claim theirs.
It’s worth noting that communities such as Ugbele-Akah and Obeakpu have no grievances with the committee, as they were duly paid to get back their shops. Individual shop owners from Amiyi-Akah also got back their shops without any official confrontation from the community’s leadership.
The Afor Umuaka market project was not initiated with any selfish intentions from the Uba village, as some might claim. Rather, the project was started without any agreement in place to protect the interests of existing shop owners. These shop owners comprise individuals from Umuaka and beyond, as well as the 10 villages of Umuaka-Ebeiri.
With due respect to my good people of Amiyi-Akah, I’m confident that no Amiyi-Akah indigene was denied the opportunity to purchase shops in Afor Umuaka or get back their shops by paying the agreed amount. The facts speak for themselves, and I hope this clarification helps to set the record straight.
