Dear People of Umuaka,
In recent times, we have witnessed a significant movement led by Governor Charles Soludo in Anambra State, which has extended its reach to Imo State, aimed at addressing the scourge of fake traditional practitioners—specifically those masquerading as native doctors (Dibia) and Ezenwanyi. It is essential to understand that this movement is not a condemnation of traditional religion or our rich Igbo heritage. Rather, it targets fraudulent individuals who exploit our customs for unscrupulous gains.
Umunnem, Soludo has made it clear that he stands against the deceptive practices of those who, donned in the guise of authentic spiritual leaders, promote falsehoods that propagate laziness among our youth. These so-called practitioners discourage industriousness, leading our young people to seek wealth through dangerous shortcuts like charms and amulets rather than through hard work and skill development.
This trend is alarming. Many youths are now lured into the dark world of ritualistic practices that not only endanger their lives but also harm our communities as a whole. The use of human parts for rituals associated with wealth is not only morally reprehensible but contributes to rising crime rates, including kidnapping. Our beloved rivers and shores are poisoned by sacrifices meant to appease these fraudulent practitioners, just as the noise pollution from market preaching undermines our communal harmony.
Governor Soludo’s advocacy for genuine traditional practices calls for all who claim to engage in these customs to prove their legitimacy and register with the state. This move is aimed at creating a framework that ensures those who practice traditional healing and spirituality operate with integrity and adhere to ethical standards. It is vital for our communities to come together to support this initiative, fostering an environment that empowers our youth to pursue productive and positive pathways.
To the youth of Umuaka, I urge you: Do not fall prey to the allure of quick fixes and false promises. The road to true success is paved with hard work, skill acquisition, and dedication. Seek knowledge, develop your talents, and embrace opportunities that foster growth and progression. Remember that true wealth is not found in ill-gotten charms but in the value you create through your contributions to society.
As we stand behind Governor Soludo in this noble cause, let us also support one another by nurturing a culture of hard work, integrity, and respect for our traditions—the authentic ones that uplift rather than deceive.
Together, we can redirect the course of our youth away from self-destruction and towards a brighter, more productive future. Let us remain vigilant and proactive, helping to shape a community where genuine practices and industriousness reign supreme.
In solidarity and hope.
